New Life

As one woman sits in the doctor's office hearing the news that she has a new little life growing inside her, the woman in the next room is learning there will never be a little life growing inside her. Such different stories, but life will change for both of them. Some might say that the one woman is receiving the better news, that she will be having a precious little one, but at this juncture in my life, I'm going to say that the other one is receiving the better news. No, I'm not saying that having a hysterectomy is way better than having a baby! Or, am I? You see, we tried for 9 years to conceive and were unable to, but God still keeps his promises and we have a son and will have a daughter that we can completely call our own when the time is right. I only gave birth to the boy (what a 13 hour pain that was!) but the girl was born in our hearts. It's a different kind of birth, one that has a special joy all it's own. Both are super special events and completely life changing. But, that isn't what I want to talk about today. What I want to talk about is why we've chosen the path that we have for my body... (I really don't know a more delicate way to put that!) I made the appointment with the doctor to tell him that we're choosing to completely end our chances of ever having any more "natural or birth" children. We decided this all our own. I'm going to get a little graphic here, so if you're weak and can't handle talking about a female reproductive system, then STOP READING NOW! lol I promise it won't be too bad and I'll be as gentle with my words as I can! To start with I learned today that I'm not normal. Shocking, huh? I was describing my "normal" monthly situation to the doctor and he stopped me to tell me that it wasn't normal. Well, it's been my normal for many, many years! You see, it's a very painful time of month for me, but I get the opportunity to showcase more than one of my awesome outfits in one day! What a way to keep up with my wardrobe! Many of you already know the issues I had with the pre-cancer cells that were causing issues with conception as well. So, we got rid of that set but lately I've had some issues with the possibility of them having returned. Because of that we made the decision to ask the doctor what our steps would be to assure us that I would not get cancer of that type. That's when he said the "H" word. My first thought...."I'm not old enough to be talking about this!" and my second "I wonder if this would help me feel better." Of course, I realize I AM old enough and yes, it probably would help me feel better! I am fully aware that this will not fix every issue I have in my life nor will it be easy to deal with when the time comes, and I know that it demolishes the chances of me ever having another "natural" child, but I'm ok with this decision. I'm happy we made this decision. Actually, I'm excited about this decision and the opportunity it holds for me, a better me. So, while each of the ladies in the doctor's office today were hearing different news, both were happy news for each of the women. Unfortunately this isn't the case for all women hearing the news I got today. Please, take a moment to pray for someone you know who's going through this. Their world might be shattering before them, but we know that God is great and has the best possible plan for our lives. He is the one who has guided me through this and has helped me see the light.

Now, as an added bonus, I want to thank every one of you who has prayed for us through this journey. Not every step has been as exciting as some, but it's been worth it, that much I'm sure of! We still have a long journey through the adoption process of our little princess, but that is more than worth it as well! God has truly blessed us beyond measure! Until it gets a little closer to adoption time, I'm not sure I'll be writing much, but I promise I WILL write about that!

Have a blessed day!

A New Post! Finally!

I just wanted to give the latest update on our adoption process. We attempted the process several times over the past year and each time we’ve gotten up to almost the day of the birth then found out we weren’t going to be able to adopt the child for one reason or another. Well, in November a friend of my husband’s parents heard about a little girl that was in foster care and would possibly be up for adoption soon. The foster parents, who’ve had her since birth, were not going to be able to adopt her, so they were looking for a good home of someone who would be interested in adoption once she becomes “adoptable” We decided to meet her and immediately fell in love with her! To get her in our home, we first have to become her foster parents, so we’ve been taking classes in the evenings and getting our house inspected to become licensed. We’ve also been spending lots of time with her, so we can begin to form a bond with her. Things are going well and on January 24th she will be moving into our home. We will be her foster parents until she is adoptable. We have no guarantees that she will become our child permanently, but we’ve decided to do what we can to make it happen. We’re just going to love her and treat her as if she’s our own, no matter what happens. She is very healthy and happy! Her name is the name Chris & I would have picked for a girl, so we're uber happy about that! So, there you have the latest! J

Still Waiting

Well, they say "no news is good news" but in this situation, it sounds rather appropriate to say "no news is no news". (see sad smile) We've had a few leads but nothing so far has come from any of them. We're still trusting and praying for the little one or ones that God has planned for us. Some days it's just harder than others to wait on His timing (when my own timing has already come and gone! lol)

Our house is really quiet these days. Our son has gone on to Job Corps and he is having a wonderful time! We visited with him this past week-end and had a great time! It does a parent's heart good when we hear our children talking about how things are going and how they are using things we've taught them. I was so worried about him, but our visit set my heart soaring for him again. It was wonderful!

There is a little noise going on in our house during the day. We've had some repairs done to our main bathroom and tomorrow we're getting a fresh coat of paint and new baseboards! I'm super excited about this! We've picked out a lovely bright green color that we thought was so cheerful! I can't wait to see it all completed!

I'm really looking forward to fall this year. I love the cooler weather and I've been visiting pinterest a lot, so I have some awesome ideas for decorating!

Chris threw a big birthday bash for me a couple weeks ago. It was so much fun! There were lots of people and tons of food and even a purse cake & photograph booth and great stories of my past! My cousins from Wichita came up and we had such a great time! He really knows how to throw a party! I'm such a blessed lady to have him and our son in my life!

Tim & Katie (Chris' brother & sis-in-law) are getting closer to having their twins. We had a big scare a couple weeks ago and she is on bed rest for now. They are hoping she will be off bed rest in the next couple of weeks and that the babies will stay put until at least November 1st. After that, the doctor will be more than excited to have them arrive. We are all patiently awaiting their healthy arrival, too!

Thanks for stopping by to visit today and especially thank you for your prayers. It's been a rough couple of months, but God is good and He always helps us see when we need to turn our focus back on Him! Have a blessed September!

Praising Him in Our Darkest Hour

Things have changed, a lot, since I last posted! We had been pursuing the adoption of the 2 little boys who's birth mother picked us, however we have pulled out of that adoption. After pulling out, we found out that neither of the children really are up for adoption, because the father is in their lives still. He has rights to them if he is supporting them and we fully understand and respect that. Our hearts are breaking, but we know that God is STILL in control. He will do nothing to harm us in anyway. We are still planning to adopt, but these little ones just weren't for us. I'd like to share with you something that I emailed a friend earlier today. It shows some of the growing that God has allowed us to do during this time.

Prayers have been our life support! I have learned so much in trusting God during this process! The other day I learned what "praising Him in your darkest hour" was all about. I got up on Thursday morning, I'd been struggling with things for days and said "so, this is what you mean about praising you in my darkest hour" and it made so much sense! And it helped me to see what He wanted me to see. God is good, no matter what, even if we don't feel it at the time we're going through our trials. We learned about patience the other day in our Sunday School class, too. It was quite humbling. Growing hurts, but once that phase is over I'll look back at all this and know that He was good to me the whole time. Thanks, again, for all your prayers & support. They mean so much to us!

I also wanted to share this with you. I found something similar on pinterest the other day and so I used the words to create my own. It's kind of our motto right now.

We truly want to thank you for your prayers, love and support during this time of our lives. We could not make it through this time without them.

Love, Helen & Chris

Update & Prayer Request

Adoption prayer warriors... I wanted to give everyone an update what our adoption. As with anything in life there are ups and downs, peaks and valleys, this adoption process has those as well. Here is where we are with the adoption of our baby...We have found out that the birth mother had what we believe is inaccurate information for the due date, which we were told July 8th. We believe the date i...s actually an August date now. Also the birth mother's phone has been disconnected, which means we have no contact with her. We fully believe that this baby is ours, and we beleive God has prepared us for this, however our faith does get tried through this. Please keep us in prayer that we will remain strong and grounded in faith as we go through this. One question that has been asked is our we sure there is a baby, the answer to that question is yes. We do have someone that we know and trust that was in contact with her before she went "dark". I will keep everyone updated as we find out new and exciting information.

And your life changes in an instant

We were finally patiently waiting on God's plan and His timing, when BAM! out of the blue, we get the call! They called to see if they could show our profile to a mom and then they called to say she had picked us! We've spoken with the birth mom and are ready to move forward! We will have more news for you soon, but for now, we need to get figured out our trip to CA to pick up these little guys!!! Please keep praying for all of us and for our transition. I promise not to make you wait too long to hear more! lol
Have a blessed day!

Our Anniversary

Good morning, friends! I just wanted to stop here and say what a wonderful 8 years it has been since we've wed! Our journey so far has been nothing short of amazing. We've learned and grown so much together! God gave us each other and we're so blessed by Him each day. Through trials & triumphs, heartache & victory, tears & laughter we make each day successful.
We're so looking forward to the rest of this journey He has planned for our lives!
God bless you!
Happy Anniversary, husband, I love you!

An update & prayer request from Chris

I wanted to update everyone on our adoption process. Our home study is complete, he has given us the green light that he fully intends on recommending to the court that we are fit to be parents without any apprehensions. We also found out through a friend of a young mother that is going to have to seek adoption. Our friend is going to give her our information. Please pray for her for God to give her wisdom and if it is God's will, that we will be shown very clearly that this is our baby. Many of asked questions and some have stated they weren't sure what to ask or if it is ok to ask, so I thought I would share with everyone what are thoughts are. Since we fully believe that God has given us our journey, and one part of the journey is we feel very strongly that we are purposed to help a mother in desperation, and for that reason we are not going through an agency. We are looking for that special person, through our efforts and our friends and family and for that reason we are very public about what we are doing. If you have questions about what we are doing please ask, if you have a lead of a potential mother/child please give them our information. We welcome any encouraging thoughts and success stories. The only thing we ask is for the stories to be positive. One question we get asked a lot is, how long does the process take. The answer to that question is as long as it takes for God to prepare us and a birth mother. We of course would like the process to already be complete, but we do know that the time will come, when the time is right. One final thought, keep us in your prayers, because while we know the timing is going to be the perfect time, sometimes we need to be reminded of that.

Home Study is DONE!

We had our last home study visit on Saturday! We spent 2.5 hours with the Social Worker, answering questions, listening to his "rough draft" of our lives. It was quite entertaining at times! Well, when he got done, he let us know that he's working on the final draft this week and will get it to us as soon as he's done. He also said that he is recommending us for approval!!! I was so relieved and excited that I broke down and cried after he left. God has carried us this far, I know He's going to carry us the rest of the way.

Now, it's time to be patient and find our little one!

Have a blessed day!

The paper work is all turned in!

Good morning friends! Today our social worker will receive the last bit of our paperwork for our home study in the form of 2 adoptive parent reference letters. For some reason the postal service lost one and so we had to ask them to write another one and in the meantime, we had asked one other person to fill one out and we got it yesterday, too. What a blessing these people have been to us to write these letters for us! Thank you, from the deepest parts of my soul, thank you.

I'll also share with you, again, how God will tell us we're ok. So I've been having some doubts while waiting on these letters to come back that maybe we're not doing the right thing because it's taking so long to get them. Maybe this wasn't God's will, but mine that we're pursuing. Just my thoughts. When it gets really bad like this I have to stop and say, "Ok, God, I want this, but what I want more is for my desire to be alined with YOUR will and not my own." This is when He speaks to me. He says, "My child, chillax! I've got this one!" lol Well, on this very Monday morning, I was going through this and I went home for lunch and I checked the mailbox and one of the refernece letters was in there. It was the only thing in the mailbox. It was with that one letter in the mailbox that I was reminded that I didn't start this journey, but rather God started this journey for us. Now, a little twist to the story...when we got home from work on Monday, there was a lot of mail in our box. There isn't an explination as to why this particular letter was there at lunchtime and none of the other mail had been delivered yet, except to say that God knew what I needed and in His infinite wisdom, He reassured me that I am living in His will. You could come up with a logical conslusion as to why that letter showed up in our mailbox when it did, but regardless, I needed Him to tell us we're ok.

Now, it's more waiting. I can't belive this process only started 5 months ago! It seems like it's been a year already! Please continue to pray for us and if you hear of anyone looking for an adoptive family, think of us. Our information is on the sidebar and you can feel free to pass it along.

Have a blessed day!

Nothing and Everything

I titled this post "nothing" because I sometimes just don't know what to say! I wanted this blog to be about our journey, but it's turning out that I only want to post when something positive has happened regarding this adoption process we're going through. I want to apologize for that. If we're writing this blog to help someone else while they're enduring the same kind of situation we are, then we have to be honest and tell it like it really is and not try to be so cheerful and upbeat all the time! Well, I must say that most of the time I am tha way, because it's who I want to be, but there are times when I get frustrated. I think the process takes too long. I don't know why I can't just have a baby. I don't understand why someone else who isn't the kind of parent I think they should be can have one but we can't. Why would someone just give me their baby. Why can't it just happen, NOW. Why aren't people spreading our information around so someone who is interested in giving a baby up for adoption will have it and contact us. Does that unhappy pregnant teenage girl walking down the road want to share her baby with me and how can I meet her to find out. I just want to cry till I get what I want. Am I not good enough. What am I being punished for. Why do I need to learn patience.

Seriously, all these things have run through my mind and some of them still do from time to time. But do you want to know what keeps me going and keeps me "sane" during this season of my life? A promise from God. He said He has a plan for us and that He would never leave us. It may not seem like much to those who don't understand how God works (as if any of us REALLY know) but He is carrying my burden, not me. I can go about fulfilling my promise to Him because He is carrying the weight of my heart on His shoulders.

By now I've changed the title of this post to "nothing and everything" because though I don't know what to say somtimes, He gives me the words that are needed. He is everything. Jesus is everything. It's not my plan, but His. He gave me this desire and He will fulfill that desire in His time and through His plan. I have nothing to worry about because we're all in His hands.

Have a blessed day.

Good News

We received a little bit of good news this week! Part of our paperwork has already been processed and we're getting closer to being approved! We still have a little bit of paperwork to fill out and get to our social worker, but the stuff that usually takes a longer time has already been processed and cleared! That is such an awesome thing! We'll post more as soon as we know more!
Please remember to keep us in your prayers, that God will continue to keep His hands on us and that we will continue to walk in His will.
Have a blessed day!

The Home Study has begun!

Well...our Home Study has begun! Yeah! We met with the social worker yesterday at our home and began filling out the encessary paperwork. He left us with a mountain more paper work as "home work" (I thought I was out of school! lol) We began filling out the "home work" and are a little over half way done already!

The meeting was rather nice. We visited with the social worker about the process he will be going through and we've decided that it's rather neat that someone is kind of writing our "biography". This will take a few weeks to process, so we will be patiently waiting. Once he is done with his writing, we will get together and review it and then he will begin the process of presenting it to the judge to gain approval for us to adopt. Having this part already done will make it easier and quicker for the adoption to be finalized when we do have our little one.

Now, today, we're getting new carpet! What a wonderful, busy, this week will be!

Thank you all for your love, encouragement and prayers! They mean so much to us!
Have a blessed day!

Thank you and an update

We'd like to take a moment to thank everyone for your love & prayers regarding our decision to adopt. We would also like to thank those of you who have donated financially to our adoption fund. Every little bit helps and we're so thankful that God laid it on your heart to help!

We've got a big year ahead of us! Many wonderful changes and blessings are in store for our family and we're so excited to see what the Lord will be doing in our lives this year! The first thing on our agenda is our home study! It will be taking place next week, finally! We're so excited about this because after it is completed we can get our "profiles" out to more places and also apply for grants. Please pray for us during the next week so that we're prepared for this home study and that we're calm and peaceful with our visit with the social worker. One thing I know for sure...God is in control and He has the perfect plan for our lives!

We hope you all have had a wonderful Christmas celebrating the birth of our Savior and spending time with family & friends. May the Lord bless you and your family during the upcoming New Year!

Love,
Chris & Helen

A time to wait

As of today, we're kind of in a waiting mode. We've secured the lawyer we want to work with and next is the home study, which is in a pre-scheduled status. We're on the list of a really great guy, but there are a couple people in front of us, so we're hoping that we can have the home study completed by the end of February. If a baby becomes available to us between now and then, though, we'll have the opportunity to get moved to the top of his list. Which is all good by me, because our landlord is installing new carpet in our house sometime this month! Woo Hoo! So excited about this!

Please continue to pray for our journey, especially for patience and allowing God to work through us daily as we do all the little things required to bring a new little on into our lives through adoption. Also, if you know of anyone who is wishing to find a great home for their baby through adoption, please give them our lawyers or our information (see "Birth Mother" tab at the top of the blog). As I've said before, any lead is a good lead, whether it results in us having our dream come true or if it results in God working through us to help someone else. It's all for His glory and all in His timing.

Have a blessed day!

Moving Forward

It feels good to know that we are moving forward! Last night we were able to meet with our Attorney to go through what to expect during our journey to adopt. He gave us a lot of great information and we're pleased to be working with such a knowledgeable and kind-hearted man. We have also started the process of doing the required home study.

Now we are in the process of waiting to see who God provides as a birth mother. Our Attorney advised us there are many ways to find a birth mother. We could find her through churches or pregnancy centers, but he said most come from friends or friends of friends. So as we move forward, we are asking our friends & family to keep their eyes and ears open and if they come across someone in a situation where they are wishing to place their baby up for adoption, please have them contact us. Though it might not lead to our adoption, every lead is a good one. Our prayer is that along this journey we will touch lives, through our story, through our love for people, through our experience of being a single mom and adoptive dad, just anyway in which we can glorify God and help others along the way.

Thank you for your continued prayers, love, support and friendship! May you be blessed!

Helen's Story

We'd like to start off this blog with a powerful story of our Journey.

This is Helen's story:

When I was 21 I gave birth to a healthy, very happy baby boy. He was awesome! I was young. I raised him as a single mother for almost 10 years. I did my best, but I certainly didn't give him as much understanding as I could have. I loved the little guy beyond anyone I've loved before, but I wasn't able to enjoy all the little things about him growing. I didn't understand that I needed to enjoy those things. Sometimes he just got in my way and made things difficult for me. My mom and my friend's mom babysat, a lot, so I could enjoy "adult time" My friends were always at our house and I never quite was able to give him undivided attention as a mother should from time to time. We did have a lot of fun, though! But someone was always with us when we were having fun. He loved the times when I didn't go out and I stayed home with him. We rented movies and ate pizza and chips and dip and soda and ice cream. This is something we still enjoy together once in a while and yes, not long ago my 17 year old son laid in my room watching Mary Poppins with me on a Sunday afternoon, at his request! lol I wasn't feeling well and it was a sweet moment with him. Anyway, fast forward through his little life to 9 when mommy met someone she loved and decided to get married. My husband and I married in April 2005 (right year husband? lol) and in October he adopted my son to be his own. October 6th to be exact. It's now called "Phelps Family Day" and we always celebrate that day in some way. This year it was just a nice dinner with our now 18 year old with an attitude, and his grandparents of 7 years, but we still celebrated, because it was important to us.
Now is the next chapter of the story-our quest for another child. When we got married we started trying to have a baby right away. Neither of us was very young anymore! (remember when 30 used to be old? ha!) We had failed attempt after failed attempt, precancerous cells to deal with and medicine to regulate and all that fun stuff. It's really not fun. It puts a lot of pressure on a relationship when dealing with infertility. It was as much my body's issues as it is possibly my husband's (he's never been officially checked, because if my body isn't working right there is no need to test him, yet) So, needless to say, our relationships have suffered some. Not just my husband's and mine, but with our son and families and with our friends. I became very bitter and jealous about every pregnancy around me. It's kind of hard to throw yourself into a friend's baby shower when you wish so bad that it was you. There were many tears shed and lots of make up used before these showers. Of course it's hard to look happy when you're dying inside! For the last several years I've been very sad and felt not worthy since it wasn't happening for us. I've even been regretting the way I raised my son, missing all the times when he was little and I could have been a better mom. Times I wish I could go back and enjoy him. Earlier this year someone called us telling us there was a baby in need and wanted to know if we'd be interested. We were floored that someone would think of us in this situation. Once the shock wore off and prayers were said and talking done with mentors, we decided that, "yes, we WOULD be interested in caring for this little one and becoming her parents." After about 2 weeks of talking to the "go-between" and waiting and planning and getting the "run around" I finally said, "look, if this isn't going to happen, I need to know, my heart is too involved" and they finally came clean and said that the person with the little one only wanted money and not really to give the child. I was devastated. That is when I really became bitter. I was so hurt. I thought God had REALLY let me down this time and that He must think I was so unworthy of a child that He would allow people who abuse children to have them, but not me. I must have really screwed up with raising my son that He wouldn't trust me with another one. Or that He was punishing me for my previous lifestyle. Let's fast forward to just last month. A friend of my husband's has a rough life. She is an alcoholic and disabled and tends to become involved with real winners of guys. She's the mother of 3 lovely children, whom she doesn't even have living with her because she can barely take care of herself, let alone 3 kids, too! There is more to her situation that I will not go into, but if you're a prayer warrior, please remember this lady in your prayers. She can use them! Anyway, she became pregnant. She didn't know what she was going to do, so she asked my husband if he and I would consider adopting her baby (which was really babies!) because her boyfriend wanted her to get an abortion and she didn't want to. So, after much prayer and discussion, we decided that it would be best for the babies if we would take care of them after they were born. We had apprehension about this, we knew there would likely be issues with the little ones but wanted something for her children that she could not give them - a loving, stable home. Well, needless to say, her boyfriend got to her and those little babies are with the best Father they could ever ask for and they are in Jesus' loving arms. Heartbreak for us - again! I began asking questions about why we couldn't do this, what was so wrong with us and why God didn't want us to have children! Once I "got over" that issue, for that day anyway, we began to talk about what our life was really going to look like. We still want a baby, but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. In my mind, we needed to make a decision - Are we going to keep waiting and hoping for it to happen or are we finally going to move on with our lives and live as if we're done with our child rearing years? My husband, who has been a rock for us during these times, says we need to pray about it. My question...how long do we pray about it? When do we make a decision to live our lives? I won't go into the rest of the discussion we had, but we were still in a quandary about the situation but knew we had to make a decision and I was quite frustrated, even angry about it all. We were planning on visiting with the Pastor soon to try to get some answers. In Sunday School the following morning, we were discussing Nehemiah and his decision to rebuild Jerusalem. One thing they were asking is "how long do we pray" the answer came to them just as simply as it came to us that day "pray until you have peace" Wow. We almost lost it right then, but the Pastor kept teaching as Chris and I were struggling to keep our emotions under control. I don't remember the rest of the lesson, but other questions I had asked the day before were answered, just as simply as the one about praying. I left church after SS and my husband and son stayed. I cried all the way home and talked to God. IT WAS AN AMAZING TIME! After lunch, Chris and I talked and prayed A LOT. We came to a decision and we had the most peace we've ever had! We know the desire of our heart is to have a baby and we're not going to keep our lives on hold waiting for it to happen. We're going to "pray for rain and build our ark" lol I don't think and I can convey the perfect peace I have about our decision. My friend, Jennifer, says "you can see it" on my face when I talk about it. I truly believe that God is going to give us our baby and I believe this is going to happen through a private adoption. I also believe that if His plan is something else for me, I am at peace with that, too. I am at peace because I'm ready for HIS will to be done in my life and not mine. I also have faith that He will give me the desires of my heart because I'm His. I have a "peace that passes understanding" I can feel it from my head to my toes and I can feel it as well as see it in my eyes and my smile. There's no longer a sad little smile, it's filled with joy and overcoming. Now, there are still going to be trials, of this I am sure and there already have been, but I have faith like I've never had before and a God that loves me more than I'll ever know. I am worthy to be a mother and my dreams and desires are important. THIS, my friends, is what peace looks like to me, finally. With or without another child, I have the peace that passes understanding down in my heart.
Oh, BTW, we are "building our ark" by redoing one of our offices to make a guest room that will be easily converted into a nursery with a simple change of a bed (we're putting a twin size bed in there so my mom can enjoy the room until it's needed for the nursery). We're also planning and preparing a list of things we know we'll need and we're planning the purchase of those things. We've started a savings plan and will be doing some fundraisers to raise money for the adoption fees.
I believe if you truly have faith, you must take action as though it IS going to happen.
Please join us in prayer for our baby.
I will post updates as we have them.

May God bless you today and may you find peace that passes all understanding in your life.

In this blog we'll keep you updated on all things going on regarding the adoption of our baby. If you have questions about anything, please feel free to contact us chrisandhelenphelps@gmail.com
